In the summer of last year we had a crazy idea - to do a contest where the winner would have a song written by us, exclusively for them.

At the time we came up with the idea, it seemed like a very daunting task.  We had no idea who would win,or what their story would be, but we did know it might be the coolest prize a band could ever give a fan.  As the contest continued and more people put their name into the running, there was a combination of excitement at the challenge and fear that the winner may have a six-syllable name that we couldn't even pronounce, much less work into a song.

After many submissions, the winner was selected.  It was a girl named Traci, and when we heard that, we were all very relieved.  It was a good start; like having a good title to a book but knowing nothing about the chapters.  The next step was a little bit of a waiting game.  We compiled a list of things that would help us understand who she was and also things about her that might work well in a song.

•    Describe a typical day in your life: My life is pretty boring.  Typically I go to class, study and write.  Sometimes I cause a bit of trouble, but who doesn't.  I stay up late and check up on those I haven't seen in a while.

It was not until the middle of January that we sat down and started writing, and in a few hours we were done.  Working on a song this way was like putting together a puzzle or writing a song backwards.  It was a balancing act between using what was written in the questionnaire, and trying to understand who Traci was based on what little we knew.  It was nice to have the challenge and satisfaction of dedicating a song to a music fan, not something we do often, but we look forward to the next time.  Though this song is about Traci, it's also a gift for everyone who took part in the contest.  We hope everyone will enjoy this Song For You, Traci Brown.
