1) things are getting desperate for me money-wise 2) i have never worked at a job that DIDN'T involve animals in some way (i want to be a vet) 3) i have applied for a job at a credit union because i have had 0 success in getting a job with animals that makes enough money for me to live on, and at this point things are getting so desperate i just need SOMETHING. i definitely don't see myself working at a credit union for the rest of my life. i just got a call from the credit union (on my voicemail), saying they want me to call them back...but how do i answer questions like 'why do you want this job?' i can't just be like "because i need the money!!!". and how do i answer the question "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" because i definitely don't see myself working at a credit union in 5 years...and to be honest if something better came along with animal work while i'm working at the credit union i would for sure quit that job and work with animals. i want the job at the credit union, but for no other reason than i need the money. what should i tell an interviewer??? ------------------------------------------------------------------- "It is books that are the key to the wide world; if you can't do anything else, read all that you can!" try telling them the truth. be like, im a hardworking person whos working towards a career in animal medicine, tell them vetiranarian. its impressive and is basically the same as saying you want to be a doctor. doctors are highly respected by all fields but i need a job right now to help support myself financially and meet financial basic needs. dont bring anything up about quitting if another job comes along. but be like you hope in 5 years to be in veteranary school.tell them that its difficult to find a job these days if they ask why you dont work at an animal hospital instead. tell that that your an honest, hardworking, serious person who can contribute many good things if they hire you to the credit union
tell them you will be a good employee at this new job if they hire you, focus on that
i hope this helped. |

I'd be honest in discussing your current skills, abilities, and the pros about yourself, but as for the "5 years" question, to be honest, I'd lie.. a bit. I don't think I would ever tell a company my true intentions if I wasn't planning on being with them in the future. Why else would they want to spend their time and money investing on someone who isn't going to last? And as for 'why do you want this job?', I don't know exactly what the position is for, but I'd just say that I wanted to improve and grow my skills in customer service/working in a team environment/whatever is listed in the responsibilities of the job/etc, etc.
Down the line you could always tell them your dream opportunity came up (vet), and bow out that way. Also, be prepared for the 'What is one thing that you don't like about yourself that you're currently working on' question. It got me last time I interviewed. O_o |

O_o yeah, i was thinking i'd lie a bit on the 'where do you see yourself in 5 years' question...but it's sort of like...if they look at my resume they will see that i've only ever worked with animals, and that looks fishy if i say 'oh i plan on still working here in the credit union in 5 years' or 'i plan on pursuing a career in finances'...they'll be like wtf??? why do you have all this animal experience then?? ------------------------------------------------------------------- "It is books that are the key to the wide world; if you can't do anything else, read all that you can!" You could always say you're looking for a more stable career, and although you love working with animals you see yourself doing that as a hobby/volunteering on the side. It's hard BSing when it would just be easier to tell the truth. I always have the same problem while interviewing for companies.

I work at a Credit Union... actually I'm at work right now. Just tell them that you're looking for financial experience and to further improve your customer service skills. Honestly, any job you have is going to have finances in it and the more you know the better. You'll learn a lot along the way so don't worry about that. The more different jobs you have under your belt the more hirable you are. Plus, having gaps in your resume does not look good. Just send me a PM if you need anything. Good luck!! GOOD ANSWER!!! omg thank you! that's so true too, because i want to open my own vet practice one day and it would just be good to know more about finances for that. and i do already have some customer service/receptionist experience under my belt, so i think i could bring something to this credit union and it could teach me a lot as well. thank you so much, that really helped. ------------------------------------------------------------------- "It is books that are the key to the wide world; if you can't do anything else, read all that you can!" In regards to the first question. You could just tell them that you're looking at ways to broaden your experience, you're interested in learning new things and finding ways to advance and build your resume.
As for the second question. The simple answer would be as vague as possible without just saying "I'm not sure" or "I don't know" Kind of paint a picture but not such a descriptive picture that leaves them with the impression that you have no intentions of sticking around. Tell them about what you would like to but don't tell them it's what you're going to do. Technically you aren't lying by only telling them what you would like to do. You would like to be a vet, they just don't have to know you plan on being one.
Also, I've found it incredibly hard to be completely honest when answering questions like that. You shouldn't worry so much about how honest you are because I'm certain the person interviewing you has done their own BSing at some point. That's part of how you get what you want. You can't go into an interview and be asked if your hours are flexible and respond saying "Well, actually.." You tell them they are for now but things may change. They'll feel better about knowing you aren't going to turn around and demand days off the minute you start the job but it also leaves them with a piece of mind, it leaves them knowing that at some point your schedule will have to be moved around a bit and having the knowledge beforehand helps them out. |

One thing I learned the hard way about interviews, you have to tell them what they want to hear. If you tell the truth that you only want the job for the money and you don't plan on staying employed there for long, they will not hire you. I speak from experience, haha. Make them think that you are very interested in the job and that you want to settle down in a career. Let them know what your skills are, your strengths and be careful about your telling them your weaknesses. |

There is nothing wrong with broadening your skills. So say that you're trying to acquire more skills and experience in another field to build on your repitoire. Before you become a licenced vet, you may work in a vets office as an administrative position and will have to have some financial skills. So there is no way it doesn't work for your advantage.
