The Meaning of Christmas Time?

Calgary_Chick Calgary_Chick 2009-12-28 14:49:11 -0600

Yeah, I know.  Christmas is over and we're not listening to Snowed In as much, but I never got a chance to post this before Christmas so here we go...

What does the song Christmas Time mean?  I am confused by the lyrics "We've been blessed by the children - black, yellow, and white.  They believe in the things we try to deny.  So throw down your weapons but continue the fight, and let's love one another on this holy night."

I totally don't get what the children believe that we try to deny?  And what is the fight referring to?

My guess on the line about what the children believe in would be a reference to the belief in Santa Clause, and maybe the "magic" that surrounds Christmas for children. So maybe they mean that adults can re-live the magical time that is christmas through their children because they believe in Christmas. As you get older you stop believing that Santa is real or that he ever existed in the first place. So that would be my guess about what the children believe and what grown ups or adults deny.

As for the fight, I'm not sure what that is referring to. I'd have to think on that one.

"The first music that you really fall in love with is more than just music." Taylor says, "Its something that clicks in you, beyond the song, it's a message or image that causes you to jump in and not let go."-(Taylor Hanson)

I guess "the fight" refers to fighting for all the good things, things worth fighting for, not giving up to cynicism, negativity etc.

Are we distracted by the sun/ the glittering jewels and the beating drums/ Is it going the distance we fear?

I never really thought the song was about Santa but that is an interesting interpretation!

Well maybe not directly about Santa, but possibly indirectly, like Children are able to believe in a more magical side of things, whereas sometimes adults just want to believe in the what I can see and hear type stuff maybe. I'm not sure, I'm not that good at dechiphering what lyrics mean, but I just kind of went with the fact that children can believe in so many things around the holidays and even beyond that that adults try to deny is real or logical I guess. If that makes sense.

I think it is a religious thing and has nothing to do with Santa.

Ive always thought it was a christian reference too. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, Jesus came to "win the fight for the lives of all mankind" in a sense. And in the bible it says to have faith like that of a child, so kind of how kids just have that innocent way of believing in things with all their heart, thats how we're supposed to believe in Jesus. I would also think the the line "continue to fight" just means, fight injustice and the ways of the world by showing love to everyone, not just the people we consider worthy of our love.

I agree. Also, the song "Jesus Loves Me" refers to the different colors of people - red, yellow, black, and white.

I really like this interpretation.  Thanks, and I hope you are right as I love it when Hanson talks about Christianity.  They normally don't directly so it's nice to be able to pick it up when they do.
