Second Times a Charm

Sun Oct 12 19:01:22 UTC 2008

In Atlanta, we were thrilled to have GSU as partners to invite students and music fans to come together for the one mile barefoot walk. Our walk began at the downtown Rialto theatre and brought us through the streets of downtown Atlanta. We had a fantastic group of walkers, stretching as far as I could see. It was also the first walk for our Walk bus crew who we were thrilled to have with us.

Birminghham, threw us a couple curve balls on weather but that did not stop our walk. The clouds looked heavy, but hundreds took their shoes off, with umbrellas in tow. As we hit the middle of the walk the rain began to come down and it was clear that we might end up in a rainy mess --- we were lucky that it did not grow beyond a misty shower but i have no doubt that the walk would have gone on regardless.

Orlando, was one of the largest walks of this tour so far. It was a hot and humid day but the crowd was ready to walk. It was fantastic to see how many people on this walk were telling us about why they felt the walk was important. Someone mentioned how they were encouraged not only to support the walk effort but how it had re kindled their passion to support breast cancer research, several other walkers mentioned they were planning their own walks. Our walk was almost shut down because of Disney's concerns about our barefoot status, but we safely displayed that we could go without shoes and that it was perfectly safe. There was not a person that wavered on their decision to go barefoot. I want to thank a few girls that I met at the end of the walk, who are all a part of the Disney internship program - they told me they are planning to do a special walk hosted by all Disney people  -- totally love it. Walk on.

Charlotte again, was a walk of it's own. A HUGE crowd filled the sidewalks, and joined us through back roads, across gravel, through tall grass, and some not so lovely sidewalks. Luckliy this time our friends at the Charlotte police were kind enough to not get up in arms about a simple charity walk - we had no conflicts. The Walk in Charlotte was an awesome display , that brought out again one of our best walks to date -- Thank you to EVERYONE who hung around and registered their mile...our walk is moving on.

Well, i am about to walk in State College - see you there. It is a beautifull day for a walk.

Our walk on October 8th was shut down BY Disney.  We had the security manager of Downtown Disney tell us we were NOT allowed to walk.  When I asked than how are we supposed to get to the hotel (as I pointed to where the members' only event was) he than said we had to fold up our signs.  Oddly enough, I don't think they noticed we were barefoot.  They didn't mention to us we needed to put our shoes on.

And of it all, I'm glad we walked.  By the end of the walk there was a total of 19 people who walked.  Thank you everyone who walked!  Even though Disney told us to fold up the signs we STILL managed to show them off to some extra cars that drove by and one even asked us what our posters said.

I love reading about these walks. It's so exciting to hear about all of the change that is going on, not just in my community, but in my state, country, and around the world. We, as Hanson fans and the band, are changing the world and I'm so glad I can walk amongst some of the coolest people ever, making everything a little better than I found it.

'Cause I'm alone in the world tonight.

It's so great that so many people are still showing up to walk, and hopefully getting inspired to do even more.  What Taylor said in the post after this one about the price of one Coke being the same amount it takes for medication to save 2 lives for that day is such a great point.  I was just talking to my husband about that.  Think of how much we spend at Starbucks in a month.  If, say 4 or 5 times, I decide not to go through the drive through today and go home and donate the money I would have spent on TakeTheWalk.net instead, one life would be saved.  That is so beyond worth it... and so incredibly simple.

That's so good to hear! Charlotte was so crazy last year, especially the police. I thought it was amazing that there were so many of us but it was so quiet and peaceful, just awesome! and Orlando WAS hot, but really a great walk.
