Wow, some people are getting way too up in arms about this. I really don't think Zac was putting down college students who don't have money (esp. since I'm sure he knows many of his fans are in school and most likely don't have a lot of money).
At the end of the post he even went on to say "Gas is expensive, the economy is not in the best shape and on top of that we apparently pissing mother nature off so much that she is trying to kill everyone in the southern united states with hurricane after hurricane.
Her decision was not the decision I felt like most people would make, and I know whether she said it or not, she was giving up a lot by giving that money away. Thank You."
He's clearly showing that he understands how tight money is for a lot of people esp. b/c of gas prices, the economy, etc. and he recognized that she would be giving up a lot by giving away the money.
I also agree with others that the reference to "claim not to have enough money for a $0.99 download" was most likely a knock on people who steal music and use the excuse that they don't have any money to make it seem okay (although they most likely could spare the dollar).
"I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, 'You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit.' As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run! If you're flammable and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit."- Mitch Hedberg |

Ugh, god I wish the posts weren't still getting all screwed up. I had that all separated into paragraphs and now it's all run together and hard to read.

I love how people keep trying to figure out his motivation to "clear" him, lol. Maybe it was a blameless statement coming from the frustration of a musican who is very much against illegal DLs (Zac def is very much against that from other things he's said), maybe it came from a place of ignorance because, as someone said earlier, he's been "rich" since he was 11. At the end of the day, I can see how it would offend, but plenty of ways that it shouldn't, but regardless, unless someone cares to go crack his head open and find out exactly what he meant, it sounds like we really don't have enough context to go on to know what exactly was going through his head.

I love this thread. Love it. I don't know why we feel like we need to justify what we do to Zac Hanson, because bottom line, the man does not give a rip about what you do as long as you are helping pay his bills.
Whether you work 4 jobs, take on a full time course load and don't have money to spare or time to party shouldn't make you feel "bad" about not giving into Hanson's charity. Neither should going out, partying your ass off, and living that side of college. Just because Hanson is behind it does not make you a "bad" fan if you choose not to buy TOMS (Because they are hideous), or buy the .99 cent song. If you really, honest-to-goodness truly want to give to Africa, there are many other ways you could go about doing it without Hanson's name behind it.
Obviously they are passionate about The Walk cause, which is incredibly commendable. However, how many times has Taylor said it? More than trying to fix the AIDS/poverty problem in Africa, they stress that our generation is one that can change the world. Spreading the idea of activism is what The Walk boils down to.
So what? I'm a "poor" college student. Whether Zac Hanson frowns upon the fact I'm not buying those fugly shoes or whatnot really shouldn't bother you in the least because it isn't as if you'll ever establish some sort of relationship with him anyway.
It's about the music, remember?

There is nothing more annoying then people who claim not to have any money to be 'poor' when they arn't. People just have different priorities and thats not a bad thing, but don't lie to yourself that you 'cant' just admit it isn't a priority. ......I'm in debt too, but I also spend/spent a lot of money on stupid s%it so i guess that is my priority.
When raising money, at some point or another people are going to get jadded, thats just the nature of the beast. I don't blaim him.

"""""here's the thing, the american government wants make money off everything. there is interest on our student loans, and often times you have to have a co-signer to even get a loan"""""............ You have to pay interest on every loan you get, that's how banks make money. A co-signer is there so the bank can turn to them for payment if the person getting the loan doesn't pay.
Government has nothing to give anybody except what it first takes from somebody, and a government that's big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take away everything you've got. - Mackinac |
