Five Thousand Miles

Mon Sep 29 00:58:03 UTC 2008

It' been great for us to arrive in cities for the second time to do a walk, like zac mentioned during our Dallas walk blog. When we arrive in a city that we have walked in before it gives us a chance to make clear that the walk is about taking action for the long haul. One mile at a time. Our great thanks go out to those that once again put their soles to the road.

Since we embarked on our Dallas walk we have taken walks in St louise,Kansas City, Minneapolis and last night Milwaukee. Each walk has been great, but yesterday's walk was particularly strong, bringing out almost 400 people and taking us over the five thousand mile mark!

As we started the walk at the front of the venue, I was impressed that Milwaukee had come out to walk in full force. It had only been 5 months since our last visit to Mil so I thought we might have waned on our willing walkers this time, but the result was contrary.

We headed down the road headed toward Marquette with so many people walking as we began I could not see the end of our mile. Walkers were strewn down the road packing the sidewalks. About halfway through we moved across a green space at the center of the Marquette campus. We headed for the sloping mound of grass at the back of the lawn and it was so nice that we invited the crowd that was on top to kneel down low on the grass so that everyone could see.

When we sat down on the grass, I looked out across a phenominal group of people. Girls, guys, some younger some older, what I saw was a group of people unified. We have a million things to keep us busy every day, distractions and concerns, bills and term papers...concerts. No person kneeling down in that patch of green was the same, but we were all choosing to be there to do our small part.

When we walk together it is really a great act of humility and service. Serving another is not something we do often enough, but as Martin Luther King Jr once said "everyone can be great, because everyone can serve". Those words rung true as I looked at the faces on the walk.

We walk because we each need the reminder that we can do something great for another by doing something simple.

The question is, what are we made of? What do we represent as a generation, as a group of people. When we look at the challenges in Africa do we see a far away statistic that is unchangeable, or do we decide to engage and know that for one person that get's a pair of shoes, or a glass of water, or another chance at a day of life that we made that difference.

The truth is today we can reach out directly to aid organizations, doctors and non profit's working on the ground in ways that could have never been possible, so in fact the idea of thinking small, and giving what you can is in fact quite effective. No one is will be critical of you if you do not make an impact in Africa, because it is not your obligation - but the queston becomes, what IS our obligation. Furthermore do we only act on things that we are obligated to ? The response to that question was evident in Milwaukee. We each choose our obligations, by the actions we take. We all chose to walk.

Thank you to everyone from St Louis to Milwaukee that have walked with us over the last few days. We have now offically flown past five thousand miles in the walk around the world, which means that many dollars (and more because of you that have given directly) have been given.
Check out TakeTheWalk.net to see your mile and others that have been registered.

We will see you on the next mile. --TAYLOR

AMAZING! This whole tour is so inspirational! Of course, I will be walking and promoting, but every time I see how much all of this inspires Hanson, it inspires me even more to do what I can with what I have! We will easily pass the 24,902 miles by the end of this tour! Laughing

Please, if you ever choose to quit your day jobs, just become novel writers. I honestly feel like shedding a tear after everything I read from you guys.

Especially the line about being unified in that moment.

seriously, you guys are awesome.

I've been to a few walks over the past few tours, and I thought that your speech at the Milwaukee walk was especially inspirational.  I'm not a very tearful person, but when you spoke those empowering words last Saturday, I couldn't help but notice my eyes were welling up.  Thank you so much for your inspiration!!!!!!

Taylor, I gotta say you're a very talented writer. Reading what you write is always special to me, because it is very fluent and well written. English isn't my first language, but I can easily tell you have a telent there. Please, don't ever stop writing!

Also, of course, what you guys are doing is such a great source of inspiration! I totally admire you for these initiatives, all that you've done and are still doing to help other people and especially how your doing it. You've inspired others to do great things and I'm sure you will continue to do so.

I'll be hosting a walk myself in a month or two and I'm very excited about it. It's going to be the very first Scandinavian walk (as far as I know) and hopefully a lot of people will come joining. Thanks for giving me this possibility and for making me think I can really do this! You make me proud - both of my self and for being a Hanson fan :) Thanks A LOT!

My dream finally came true on November 3rd 2008 in Chicago. I went on the Walk, and got a chance to talk to Taylor Hanson. He actually hugged me. Dreams really do come true.
