Walk on In The North

As we say often, every walk is different, and our trecks in Canada were anything but the exception. In Vancouver our walk took us down busy city streets with many people watching as we peacfully disrupted the normal commute. We had a moment to talk in the middle of the walk on the sprawling Courthouse steps and made our "I Took The Walk" call heard loud and clear with our 150 strong group of walkers. As we were walking down the street one girl who was taking part in the walk made it known to me that she could never take her shoes off, I asked her if she felt that way why she chose to join us. Her response was that she wanted to walk but was afraid to hurt her feet. "Thank you" I said, our point exactly. If a shoe matters, think of all the other things we could give and the difference it could make. She took her shoes off after all. Vancouver - 151 walk miles registered. Calgary could not have been more different from Vancouver. In Calgary we were concerned that we would be partly responsible for giving a bunch of people nmeonia cause it was in the love 40's (ferenhiet) and it was raining. We delayed the time of the walk a little in order to try and wait for the rain to subside and it did, but it was still wet and cold. As we kicked off the walk on the campus of Calgary university I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people were pulling their shoes off regardless of the cold and wet conditions. I thought we had slipped through without getting hit be the rain, but by the time we hit the middle of the walk it began coming down again. As we made our way through the campus a guy ran up to me with a bit of a hobble, he asked if I could sign something for him, but I noticed he was having a bit of trouble walking. He showed me that he had a cast on his foot so he could not take that shoe off otherwise he would be going totally barefoot. I did not think to look at both his feet in that moment, but as we got closer to the end of the walk, I saw that he had done his best to join the barefoot walkers. One shoe was still on to cover his cast, the other foot was bare. It was cold and raining. Calgary 108 cold wet walk miles registered.
Edmonton was a bit surreal cause the concert - where the walk took place- was connected to the edmonton mall, which is apparently one of the largest malls in the world. We kicked off the walk strolling through a parking lot where ready shoppers were looking on in some confusion. It was great to see a diverse group of guys, girls and even people who brought their small children out to the walk. To complete the mile we wound our way across to a near by park and circled the green lawn. When we stopped for a moment was when I realized just how many kids were represented on the walk that day. From the top of the slide we perched ourselves discuss the purpose of the walk, and I saw several young kids who's parents were bringing them along. Sitting up on the top of the slide I was struck by how children can find a way to make the worst situation joyful. Without playgrounds or new toys to play with kids find a way to play. Even those that we met on our different trips to Africa , if they were not too sick to run , they would run with all their might. The walk gives us -isaac zac and myself- a constant reminder of what we are hoping to encourage in each person that walks. We have so much we can use to reach others, so many things to give. The children that are in need, they will not force you to rise to their aid, they will not guilt you into submission from across the ocean, they are busy trying to play, trying to run, regardless of whether there is no hope for their future. Edmonton 162 walk mile's registered.
Remember. Every person that has walked with us - or has hosted a walk on their own , we are giving a dollar to one of five key causes chosen be each person that walks - clean water, acccess to medical care, medical treatement for HIV positive mothers, building a school or providing TOMS shoes. That dollar we are giving is just the beginning.
Check out TakeTheWalk.net and see how the miles have been counted, give directly to a cause that resonates with you, or host a walk in your town.

Firstly, thank you for that Taylor. Secondly. I must admit, I am a little upset, that I was unable to participate on a Walk with you guys as of yet. In all honestly, I think I am more upset with not being able to attend a walk this tour then not being able to attend a show. However; that only makes myself more determined to have a great walk right where I am. And as well, we do appreciate your concern for our well being, however; as Canadians, we are used to the cold, and the rain, and all of that. It can be brutal weather, but we're tough! I am sure It was a little nicer than Canada last year in December!! And as Ottawa as an example, we walk regardless of the weather!! If we have to suffer some comfort, and get a little cold, for something greater, than I say, so be it.

So true, we all have something to give. Thank you guys for being a great example of that, and for giving us the opportunity to be apart of that.
Give me the beat boys and free my soul I want to get lost in your rock n' roll and drift away........

You, Isaac, Taylor, and Zac, are geniuses. You have thought of brilliant ways to bridge the gap between us and people in need. You never cease to amaze me with the resources that you are using to help out in whatever way possible. The people in Africa are really exactly like us. They have the same hopes, dreams, and aspirations and all they need is a little help to be able to live out their wildest dreams. Thank you so much for giving us, as fans, a way to make a difference. Oftentimes, people think that helping involves countless hours and undying efforts, but a little from everyone does go a long way. My second walk was on Monday, but it is certainly not my last. I donated one dollar on Monday, but it is the first of many. I've made a difference in the lives of some, but there are many more who will recognize my face. And you, Hanson, have shown me that all of that is possible. Amazing. This is just the beginning, indeed.

Thank you for posting that Taylor!
It amazes me to think of all the people you guys are helping. It fills my heart with pride to be able to be a part of something so much bigger than ourselves. To help put an end to suffering is what everyone should be doing, not just a few..we should all be able to have the same quality of life, no matter where you live. you should not have to worry about being in pain in a every day life situation. As a person who lives with chronic pain, and may not be able to carry a child, running and jumping can't be part of my everyday life, I thank you for giving me the means to help others, to impact their lives in a positive way, and making me appreciate everything else I have in my life. all I can say is THANK YOU! Can't wait for TRB! Thanks for my M&G in Toronto, Calgary & Edmonton were AMAZING! |

Lol I was on the Walk in Vancouver and I remember that girl that didn't want to take her shoes off.. i had been talking with Taylor when it happened actually.. and she said she didn't want to get hurt or get any diseases.. Taylor gave her a hard time and guilt tripped her and me and my friend said something to her about it as well --- then she said "well if i take off my shoes, then i hope you guys can cover the medical if something happens" then Taylor told her that if she took her shoes off, he'd donate $100 to the Walk (which he pulled out of his pocket and waved around to the crowd) and she totally caved in!
later, i was behind Taylor still and the hundred was almost falling out of his back pocket and I told him a bum would get it if he didn't stuff it back in, which he laughed at and did immediately.
haha. Good walk in Vancouver!!! Sept. 10, '08 -spent a total of 7 hours with Hanson in Vancouver (on TV with them for 3, the walk, m&G and frontrow centre @ the concert & by the bus after!!) BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!! Vancouver 2000 This Time Around Tour

Thank you for posting that, Taylor. :)
I was so grateful that my husband and I were able to walk with you guys in Calgary and Edmonton. It feels so good to know that we can all make a difference in the world by doing something so simple. I've always felt like I didn't know what to do to help others, and I've felt like I needed to make a huge gesture in order to make a difference in the world. Thank you for showing me that simple things really do have great value and that we can all make a difference. :)
I am currently working with another Hanson fan to host a second Walk in Calgary. We will be holding it on November 2nd. I am so excited!!! :) Thank you for inspiring me!
Allison ♥ Thank you Hanson for an amazing tour!! Calgary Took the Walk on Nov. 2! :) |
