What are you doing locally?

One project I'm trying to really get going is setting up a club at my university where we crochet and knit hats, scarves, mittens, etc. and donate them to homeless shelters in the area.  For the past year I've been doing this myself, and realized that if one person can make a difference, more people doing the same thing can make an even bigger difference!

There's a homeless shelter in a city nearby that I feel particularly close with due to the amazing work that they do.  One of those things they do is a tour of the city (just a small part of the city), and talk about the amount of poverty there.  They talk about prostitution (of all ages, and how one can be tricked in to becoming one, horror stories, etc.), drug and alcohol problems, violence on the streets, homeless children, HIV/AIDS, and just so much more.  They take you to various places in the area that are set up to help people in the community, and afterwards, they get someone who was homeless talk to the group and tell them their story.  It's really moving, and really brings to light the problems that are in our own communities, right under our noses.  With my mom's pastor, I'm trying to get together a group from my mom's church to go to this place, and hopefully the church will become more involved with either that homeless shelter, or other ones.

This isn't as local, but my mom's church donates money to an orphanage in Tanzania, and I'm hoping to get the children to do a penny drive to collect money for the orphanage to be sent over there.

I also want to have a Style Your Sole party, but TOMS said that the cost of shipping would be brutal because I live in Canada.  However, I still think it will be doable, and have not given up hope!

I like to think that every little thing that each of us does to help a cause, whether it be HIV/AIDS in Africa, the homeless in our own communities, or a serious disease, is a step in improving this world and making it even a little bit more liveable for those who really are without.  That's why I always walk around with a pocket of change to give to whoever needs it, even a person in the line in front of me who's short 5 cents to buy their groceries.  Even the smallest of things make a difference!
